Purpose

To assist Northeast Mississippi Community College students, faculty and staff in obtaining library materials not owned by the Northeast Mississippi Community College Libraries.

Eligible Materials

Interlibrary loan service is available for courses offered by Northeast Mississippi Community College and Mississippi Virtual Community College. Textbooks for these courses are not eligible for ILL request. Students enrolled in college or university classes at another institution should make ILL requests to the libraries at those institutions.

Submitting Requests

Request for loans may be submitted to a librarian during regular library hours or requested by email to Ellice Yager at leyager@nemcc.edu. Use the following form to make a request: ILL Request Form.

Current copyright laws prohibit the library from ordering more than 5 articles dated within the past five (5) years from any one particular journal title during any one given year unless copyright fees are paid to the publisher. For this reason borrowers may be asked to limit requests for current articles. All items must be returned before another loan may be requested.

Time

Materials usually arrive within two (2) weeks after a request is made. In some instances the process may take longer. The interlibrary loan staff notifies borrowers when their requests have been received.

Charges

ILL services are free as long as no charge is made by the lending library. If the individual making the request does not want to pay for the charges requested by the lending library, the ILL request is not completed.

Limitations of Loans

The conditions of ILL services are set by national and regional codes as well as by the policies of each lending library. The following types of materials ordinarily cannot be requested for loan:

  • Whole issues of serials
  • Rare material
  • Genealogical, heraldic and similar materials
  • Audiovisual material
  • Reference books
  • Software
  • Manuscripts and other unpublished materials

Loan Periods

The lending library determines the length of the loan period for materials, which is usually between one and four weeks. Renewals should be requested only in unusual circumstances, and MUST be requested BEFORE the due date. Many libraries do not allow any renewals, so patrons are urged to plan their research to complete the use of ILL material before the due dates.

Book Returns and Overdue

Materials borrowed should be returned to the library during regular library hours. Prompt returns enable Northeast to remain in good standing with the lending institutions. Delinquencies could result in discontinuation of service or placement of a hold on the students name in the colleges Banner system.
