Honors Institute

The Northeast Mississippi Community College Honors Institute exists to provide students who demonstrate academic excellence with enriched course offerings, diverse opportunities to develop higher-level thinking skills, and experiential learning programs to promote social and personal growth.

Honors students enjoy registration in Honors coursework; Honors advising and mentoring; special Honors events, including opportunities for academic presentations and awards; increased academic rigor; leadership development training; and a private Honors classroom and lounge.

As part of its mission, the Honors Institute recognizes graduating Honors students with the following designations: 

• Student meets all maintenance requirements
• Student earns 18 or more hours of Honors coursework
• Student completes 2 Honors Forum classes

In addition to these recognized graduation levels, students’ Honors coursework is designated on their NEMCC transcript. The NEMCC Honors Institute has articulation agreements in effect with various four-year honors programs at both Mississippi and Alabama colleges. These articulation agreements benefit Honors students seeking to transfer into university honors programs.

Hall of Fame

Four to six students are chosen annually to be placed in the Northeast Mississippi Community College Hall of Fame. To be eligible for consideration, a student must be enrolled full-time in his/her fourth semester of college and have completed a minimum of 45 prior semester hours from Northeast. A student must earn a minimum GPA of 3.25. The nominations are made by the faculty and staff with the Hall of Fame Selection Committee making the final selection.

Honor Graduates

Northeast Mississippi Community College recognizes the accomplishment of its graduates on two levels: Vice President’s Scholar and President’s Scholar. The President’s Scholar and the Vice President’s Scholar are awarded to students who receive either the Associate of Arts Degree,  the Associate of Applied Science Degree, or the Career Certificate in one of the recognized curriculum offerings of the institution. The student must have completed a minimum of 24 semester hours of academic course work while enrolled at Northeast. Students who meet these criteria and who qualify for graduation will be awarded the appropriate recognition based on their cumulative grade point average (GPA). Vice President’s Scholars may have a cumulative GPA ranging from 3.50 to 3.99. President’s Scholars will meet the same criteria with a cumulative GPA of 4.0.

Recipients of these honors will be recognized by receiving notation of the honor on the college transcript.

Honor Rolls

Honor rolls are published at the end of each semester. A student who earns a grade point average of 4.00 for the term on a minimum of 12 academic hours will be named to the President’s List. A student who earns a grade point average of 3.50 to 3.99 for the term on a minimum of 12 academic hours will be named to the Vice President’s List.

High School students are not eligible for the President’s List or the Vice President’s List.  High School students are not eligible for any student activity reserved for full-time college students.  This applies for high school students enrolled in full-time hours or those that have earned enough college credit to achieve sophomore standing. High School students are allowed to reserve their status as first-time, full-time students for freshman scholarships.  

Student Awards

Northeast Mississippi Community College recognizes that student awards are necessary for the successful operation of the college. Therefore the college authorizes the purchase of awards in recognition of outstanding student achievement based on a pre-determined set of criteria. These awards include Hall of Fame, Outstanding Student Awards, Academic Excellence Awards, Athletic Awards, etc. A complete listing of student awards, the maximum amount expended on these awards, and the budget allocated for these awards can be obtained in the Office of the Executive Vice President.
