October 22, 2020

Three Northeast Mississippi Community College students are the recipients of caring acts from a local professional organization.

Alexia Stovall of Corinth, LaShawyna Morris of Tupelo and Carley Carruth of Belden all received scholarships from the Eliza Pillars Registered Nurses of Mississippi organization on Thursday, October 15, 2020.

Former Northeast nursing instructor Clara Hurd, a member of the Eliza Pillars Registered Nurses of Mississippi – District I – Tupelo division was on hand to give out the scholarships.

Scholarships are just one part of the Eliza Pillars Registered Nurses of Mississippi Association which is dedicated to excellence in healthcare and is celebrating its seventy-fifth (75th) year after its founding in 1945.

Each scholarship is based on a variety of criteria such as grade point average, financial need and an essay, which is submitted by the recipient.

In total, the three students received $2,000 from the organization. Stovall picked up a $1,000 scholarship in honor of Dr. Barry Bertolet of Tupelo and retired major general Augustus L. “Leon” Collins of Booneville, while Morris and Carruth were both awarded $500 scholarships.

Morris’ scholarship was in honor of Dr. Norris Crump of Tupelo while Carruth’s scholarship was in honor of City of Tupelo Councilman Willie Jennings.

Eliza Pillars Registered Nurses of Mississippi is named after the first colored nurse in the state of Mississippi to work for the Mississippi State Board of Health (1926). Pillars played a prominent role during the 1927 flood and became a nurse that inspired others to take a stand, demand respect and gain more knowledge of their profession. The organization was founded in 1945 in Jackson and was later renamed the Eliza Pillars Registered Nurses Club in the 1950s and was chartered as the Eliza Pillars Registered Nurses Association, Inc., of Jackson, Mississippi in 1982. In 2003, after becoming nationally known, the name became the Eliza Pillars Registered Nurses of Mississippi to better reflect its existence and the vision of its founders and Golden Nurses.
