Placement Policy for NEMCC Courses
When students are admitted, their ACT scores are reviewed to determine if specific skills need to be improved by way of course placement.
ALGEBRA COURSE PLACEMENT
NEMCC has a prerequisite ACT Math Subscore of 19 for MAT 1313 College Algebra. There is no longer a minimum ACT Math Subscore for MAT 1233 Intermediate Algebra. Students may progress to MAT 1313 with a grade of “C” or higher in MAT 1233. Students who wish to challenge their placement based upon their ACT Math Subscore must take the Accuplacer test, Elementary Algebra. A minimum score of 88 is required to test into MAT 1313. Students who feel as if they need extra help, may choose to sign up for MAT 0123 Beginning Algebra.
Students who have an ACT Math subscore of 22 or higher and Advanced Math and Trigonometry in high school are eligible to register for the following:
MAT 1613 Calculus I or MAT 1513 Business Calculus I.
ENGLISH COURSE PLACEMENT
NEMCC has a prerequisite ACT English Subscore of 17 for ENG 1113 English Composition I. Students who do not meet this prerequisite are placed into ENG 0113 Beginning English and Reading. Students who wish to challenge their placement based upon their ACT English Subscore must take the Accuplacer test, WritePlacer. On a scoring range of 1 – 8, a minimum score of 5 is required to test into ENG 1113.
CHALLENGES TO PLACEMENT SHOULD BE REGARDED AS OPTIONAL, NOT AS RECOMMENDED OR NECESSARY, AND AVOIDED DURING SUMMER ORIENTATION. STUDENTS SHOULD REGISTER ACCORDING TO ABOVE AND MAY VISIT THE COUNSELING CENTERAT A FUTURE DATE TO CHALLENGE AND ADJUST SCHEDULE IF SUCCESSFUL.
