Why Join the Honors Institute?

The Northeast Honors Institute fosters deep student engagement through curricula, community, and leadership experiences. We strive to create a supportive and challenging learning environment while helping individualize educational experiences for students. As such, criteria for acceptance and continued enrollment are held to a high standard.

Enrollment Criteria

Students seeking involvement in the Northeast Honors Institute may be accepted through two pathways:

Entering Freshman

• High School GPA of at least 3.5
• An ACT composite score of 25 or above; no subscore below 19
• At least 2 letters of recommendation (1 character reference and 1 academic)
• An admission essay; specific instructions designed by Director(s)
• Possible interview with the Director(s) upon request
• Any incoming freshman who has 12 or more academic dual credit hours may be considered under Current Student standards.

Current Students

• College cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 and 12 completed academic hours (excluding developmental and activity courses)
• At least 2 letters of recommendation (1 character reference and 1 academic)
• An admission essay; specific instructions designed by Director(s)
• Possible interview with the Director(s) upon request

Students not meeting all the qualifications may still apply and gain admission at the discretion of the director(s).

Continued Enrollment

For students to remain in good standing within the Northeast Honors Institute, the following criteria must be maintained each semester:

• 3.5 GPA (cumulative)
• A minimum of 15 academic hours each semester
• A minimum of 3 hours of honors courses per semester
• Must enroll in an honors forum course during the first semester of enrollment
• Participate in at least 1 semester of honors forum coursework
• Perform service hours
• Adhere to the Honors Code

Two Levels of Graduation Standards

Honors Scholar

• Meet all maintenance requirements
• Earn 12 honors hours
• Complete 1 Honors Forum class

Distinguished Scholar

• Meet all maintenance requirements
• Earn 18 honors hours
• Complete 2 Honors Forum classes

Honors Scholars will receive recognition on their transcript and a graduation cord

Distinguished Scholars will receive recognition on their transcript, graduation cord, and a medallion
