From Jay VanWinkle, Beth’s husband:

“Beth was diagnosed at age 58 with Alzheimer’s disease and made the decision to be open with her illness, start a “bucket list”, and do all she could to help find a cure for this terrible disease.”

“After informing all our friends of what was going on in our lives, we sat down and made plans to do all the things she had wanted to do before she died.  We traveled extensively, rode a horse and she skydived twice.  Toward the end of her illness, she decided that she wanted to do all she could to help others.   One-way she did this was by donating her body to science.  Her reasoning was simple, “when I die, I will be in heaven immediately and my body may help find a cure for some disease.”

“Another way she wanted to help people was to start a scholarship for one of the graduating seniors in our area.  Her requirements were pretty simple and she just wanted someone to have a chance that she and I never had.”

“The recipient of this annual award will be someone who embodies the characteristics of Beth.  They must be honest, hard-working and have a sense of fairness to all. Beth never met a stranger and anyone who knew her loved her and became a friend for life.  She was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother and left a lasting legacy of kindness and friendship that few people possess.”

“Beth was very proud that we could offer this scholarship in her name and I am very proud to continue this offer for as long as I am able.”
